So I got this article from a friend of mine, who may be getting better than I am at finding relevant literature about education...
Some discussion:
This article has an interesting take on TFA. I think that the people who apply for TFA now are different than the people who applied for it when I was in college. When I was in college, people COULD get jobs. Most of the people I graduated with became consultants making MUCH more than I do. So if you applied for TFA, you knew that you were making that choice for different reasons than getting a job.
Now, in this economy, I worry about people's intentions. And fears. And thoughts about TFA being a "launching ground" for graduate school.
Not that everyone is like that. Most people who do TFA are not. But... a girl has to wonder.
More fun discussion:
I went to college with the columnist's son. And I was his daughter's camp counselor. (Imagine me running around this crazy fine-arts camp going..."WAIT, She's a camper? Her father writes for the NEW YORK TIMES. Can I meet him? I'm obssessed with the NY Times!)
Caveat: I read the Times (print edition) every day @ lunch during college so it wasn't weird that I knew who he was.
